What is Psiphon VPN?

How Psiphon works:
Bad boy Psiphon utilizes several techniques to bypass your service provider firewall, captive portals, and even Deep Packet Inspection to give the users free Internet access. To explain how Psiphon works to give users free Internet access, I will depict using the content delivery networks CDN method.
Though I have explained this method extensively in our post on how to get free Internet via content delivery networks, I will briefly brush it again for the sake of understanding.
According to Cloudflare, "A CDN allows for the quick transfer of assets needed for loading content including HTML pages, javascript files, stylesheets, images, and videos." In other words, a CDN improves the efficiency and speed of a website by reducing the delays in loading webpage contents, and as well, enhances its security.
The significance of content delivery networks has grown so much that today, more than half of the web traffic today in the world is being served through CDN networks. Not only that, content delivery networks today have been projected to carry 75% of the world's total Internet traffic come 2022.
Now back to the free Internet aspect. Your Internet service provider or carrier too uses content delivery network providers to serve their contents. Some of these CDN hosts are whitelisted on your Internet service provider's network. But then, if those CDN hosts are whitelisted on your ISP network, it simply means that any of them can be used as an SNI host to get you free Internet access. But then again, a majority of these hosts are part of the deep web and are very difficult to find.
To easily overcome this, Psiphon employs a clever technique by using several content delivery networks to handle their traffic. The idea behind this is to host a lot of their reflectors behind several CDN networks, thus, giving them a higher chance that they will fall on the same CDN network with that as your ISP.
Let's say for example. Your ISP has whitelisted www.pappihex.com on their network. This www.pappihex.com could be their own domain or the domain of a company or organization in partnership with your ISP. Normally, these kinds of sites are hidden and you won't find them even when you see search online because they are a part of the deep web, and Google, Yandex, and other search engines don't index them as per their request. So, only the company and your ISP know that the domain exists.
Now, this domain www.pappihex.com resolves to 12.123.12.12 which points to www.abazz.cdn.com, which happens to be part of a CDN. Now, this is where it gets interesting. If your ISP whitelisted www.pappihex.com for free access on their network, the IP address 12.123.12.12 will also be whitelisted and so will www.abazz.cdn.com too. But then, a CDN is a large network that consists of several domains, and if these domains are mapped to the same IP address or CDN host as that of www. abazz.cdn.com. That will mean all those domains will be whitelisted on your ISP network too.
In other words, if Psiphon hosts its reflector or servers on that same CDN network with www.abazz.cdn.com, you will be able to get free unlimited Internet access even without having to configure your Psiphon VPN app with any free host or SNI host.
Since it's a common practice for ISPs to whitelist some domains on the CDN network that they operate, what Psiphon does is to host their reflectors on several content delivery networks CDN so as to get more chances to land on the same CDN network with that of a site whitelisted by your ISP.
A few examples of the top CDN network providers out there include Cloudfront CDN, Cloudflare CDN, Fastly CDN, Akamai CDN, Imperva CDN, Microsoft Azure, Verizon Edgecats CDN, and a few others. These are the types of content delivery networks that Psiphon and other top tunneling apps use to host their reflectors and forward the traffic to bypass your ISP firewall, DPI, etc. for free net access.
For example, Psiphon uses Akamai content delivery networks to host their reflectors. But just then you know, Akamai hosts 20% of all the web traffic in the world! This means with Psiphon VPN, there is a 20% possibility that your network provider might be using Akamai's CDN services. Combined with other top CDN services that Psiphon uses, there's even a bigger chance of your ISP whitelisting a domain that has Psiphon's reflector(s).
How to get Free Internet on Psiphon VPN
There are several ways that the Psiphon VPN app can be used to tunnel for free Internet access. We used two methods to depict how it works: The automatic Scan Method and the Custom HTTP Proxy Method.
But just before we proceed with the free Internet trick set up, below are the requirement for this free net tunneling to take place.

Requirements:
1. Any SIM card of any network in the world with zero data and call credit
2. An Android device, iOS, or PC.
3. Psiphon VPN app (Click here to download Psiphon for Android, PC, and iOS)
4. The setup to get free Internet

1. Automatic Scan Method:
This method doesn't require the Psiphon user to use any SNI host to configure the app for free Internet access. Check out the few options below.
i. Content Delivery Networks:
This has to do with CDN content delivery network to give Psiphon users free Internet access. Just as I explained how Psiphon works, Psiphon uses several CDN networks to handle their traffic, and most ISP or carriers too uses the same CDN networks with them. If your ISP or carrier happens to be one of them, and then whitelist a domain in the future, you will be able to get free Internet access without any need to configure the Psiphon app.
Note: This CDN method doesn't always work though, it happens only from time to time.
Follow the below procedures to set up your Psiphon for this method:
- Open your Psiphon Pro app
- Click on Select server region and then select the "Best performance"
- Click on Proxy Settings and then do the following:
Connect through an HTTP Proxy: Tick
Custom HTTP headers: Ignore this part
Use system network settings: Tick
- Now return back, connect and then wait for Psiphon to scan if it has been whitelisted on your network. If it has, Psiphon will connect. Minimize and then enjoy free unlimited Internet access.
In case your ISP or carrier isn't on the same CDN network with Psiphon, or they didn't whitelist any site behind the same network. You won't be able to get free Internet access. Proceed to the next procedure below. But then, you can check this method from time to time.
ii. Open Ports:
There are some times when your Internet service provider or carrier do leave some ports open on their network for certain reasons. Some do leave theirs at a certain time of the year, while others do leave theirs open all the time.
Similar to how Droid VPN does it, Psiphon can exploit these ports to give you free Internet access at no cost. It's also similar to the Open ports + free hosts + working Proxy = free Internet techniques that we discussed here.
Note: Open ports do get closed from time to time, so don't expect this method to work all the time. In fact, this method doesn't work that much.......though once in a while it does.
Follow the below procedures to set up your Psiphon for this method:
- Open your Psiphon Pro app
- Click on Select server region and then select the "Best performance"
- Click on Proxy Settings and then do the following:
Connect through an HTTP Proxy: Tick
Custom HTTP headers: Ignore this part
Use system network settings: Tick
- Now return back, connect and then wait for Psiphon to scan your network if there are open ports on it. If there is, Psiphon will connect. Minimize and then enjoy free unlimited Internet access.
Just you know, you won't be able to get free Internet access if there aren't any open ports on your network. If this happens to be your case (which is likely to be so), proceed to the next procedure below.
iii. Internet pack:
This method isn't new. To use this, you are required to buy some form of Internet package. This isn't the regular Internet pack that will give you data to surf the net. Instead, this Internet package could be a "Social pack" for WhatsApp, Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, WeChat, etc. Or maybe a "Learnbundles" pack for Zoom, Teams, GoogleMeet, Skype, etc, or something similar.
The idea is to subscribe to any of these Internet packs that allocates more data to a specific site or service, but won't give you full access to the Internet except on those platforms. For example, one network I know will give 2GB worth of data for $5 while it also has a monthly youtube unlimited plan for the same $5.
Now, when you purchase such a plan, Psiphon can be used to unlock the limit on the plan to grant you access to the whole Internet. No proxy or SNI hostname is needed for this part, follow the procedures below and configure.
Follow the below procedures to set up your Psiphon for this method:
- Open your Psiphon Pro app
- Click on Select server region and then select the "Best performance"
- Click on Proxy Settings and then do the following:
Connect through an HTTP Proxy: Tick
Custom HTTP headers: Ignore this part
Use system network settings: Tick
- Now return back and then click on connect. When Psiphon finally establishes a connection to the Internet, minimize and then enjoy free Internet access.
Note: This method is just part 1 of the Internet pack method. This method doesn't work or give you issues of any sort, follow the same Internet pack method under the Custom HTTP Proxy Method for it uses a hostname and will work without issue(s).
2. Custom HTTP Proxy Method:
Unlike the Automatic Scan Method that doesn't require you to input any proxy, SNI host, or free host, this method requires all that I've mentioned and as we some configuration. This method is also way better than the Automatic scan. Read on and get your Psiphon working for you.
i. Free Pages or Host:
This method has to do with you using the free pages or sites on your carrier or Internet service provider's network to get free Internet. What are free pages or host then? These are sites that you can browse upon for free without exhausting your data. That is, you don't need to have data for you to access them. They have been whitelisted by your ISP.
Yeah, I know some of you will be like, "It's easy! I know so many free pages on my network which will do the trick", but then that isn't always the case. Not all free pages can be used to get free Internet if they have been heavily filtered.
I have listed a few tutorials below to help you out in combing or digging for free hosts or whitelisted sites on your ISP network:
- You can learn on your own how to get free hosts on your network for free. The trick is easy for anyone, you don't need to depend on someone to keep providing free SNI hosts for you.
- This link leads to a post that will show you the free hosts that people in your region and networks are using to get free Internet access.
- Finally, we have a post that contains thousands of free hosts that you can use to get free Internet access. All you need to do is locate your country and network and drown yourself with many free hosts.
Now that you've gotten an idea of how it works, follow the procedures below and set up your Psiphon VPN app to get free Internet access.
- Open your Psiphon Pro app
- Click on Select server region and then select the "Best performance"
- Click on Proxy Settings and then do the following:
Connect through an HTTP Proxy: Tick
Custom HTTP headers: Ignore this part
Use system network settings: Don't tick
Use the following settings: Tick
Host: input your host here i.e www.api.who.int
Port: 80 or 8080 or 443
- Now return back, click on connect and then wait for Psiphon to establish a connection to the Internet. When it does, minimize and then enjoy free unlimited Internet access.
ii. Reverse Proxy or Host:
This method isn't much different from the method of the free page that we just discussed. However, we do use this method to also get more free hosts, or let me say better hosts that will give better results...by reversing it.
This method comes in handy when the hosts you are trying to use are acting up or giving you issues. This method will give you the other domains hosted on the same network as the free host that you had. This way, it's a bit easy to bypass your Internet service provider firewall. Once you are done, use the host(s) that you've gotten to configure Psiphon as shown below.
- Open your Psiphon Pro app
- Click on Select server region and then select the "Best performance"
- Click on Proxy Settings and then do the following:
Connect through an HTTP Proxy: Tick
Custom HTTP headers: Ignore this part
Use system network settings: Don't tick
Use the following settings: Tick
Host: Use the host or IP address that you got here
Port: 80 or 8080 or 443
Now return back, click on connect and then wait for Psiphon to establish a connection to the Internet. When it does, minimize and then enjoy free unlimited Internet access.
iii. Internet Pack:
Wait, haven't we treated this before? Yeah, we have. However, everything was on auto and we didn't involve any hostname. Just as we discussed before, this Internet pack method involves Internet packages that give a big amount of data or even unlimited data to access some services alone. If you are still lost, then kindly refer to the "Internet pack" under the Automatic Scan Method.
When you subscribe to a particular Internet service, you can use the site's URL or domain name to configure Psiphon and get full access to the web. Below is a few examples of some services and their URLs:
YouTube Pack: www.youtube.com, m.youtube.com, etc
WhatsApp pack: v.whatsapp.com, v.whatsapp.net, web.whatsapp.com, www.cdn.whatsapp.net, etc
GoogleMeet: www.meet.google.com, meet.google.com, etc
Follow the procedures below and configure your Psiphon VPN app.
- Open your Psiphon Pro app
- Click on Select server region and then select the "Best performance"
- Click on Proxy Settings and then do the following:
Connect through an HTTP Proxy: Tick
Custom HTTP headers: Ignore this part
Use system network settings: Don't tick
Use the following settings: Tick
Host: Use the host or IP address for the Internet package that you got here
Port: 80 or 8080 or 443
Now return back, click on connect and then wait for Psiphon to establish a connection to the Internet. When it does, minimize and then enjoy free unlimited Internet access.
iv. Content Delivery Networks:
This CDN network method is similar to the first one that we discussed. While that method had to do with Psiphon scanning your network to give free Internet access, this one requires you to find out the CDN hosts from your free or whitelisted sites to use on your Psiphon app to get free Internet access.

With the above, you will be able to get the CDN host or IP address which you can then use to configure your Psiphon app to tunnel for free Internet access. Follow the procedures below and set up yours.
